The following is an excerpt from my new book, “MORPHING INTO THE REAL WORLD – A Handbook for Entering the Work Force” which is a survival guide for young people as they transition into adult life. The book offers considerable advice regarding how to manage our personal and professional lives. As a part of this, I found it necessary to describe the four types of personalities commonly found in the work place.

Personality Types

You will undoubtedly encounter many different types of personalities in the work place, each with their own unique blend of nuances. But there are four basic types of personalities from which they are based, which is commonly referred to as A, B, C, and D. Although volumes have been written on such personality traits, here is a synopsis:

Type “A” Personality – Is a highly independent and driven personality, typically representing the leaders in business. They are blunt, competitive, no-nonsense types who like to get to the point. They are also strong entrepreneurial spirits (risk takers). As such, they embrace change and are always looking for practical solutions for solving problems.

Type “B” Personality – Represents highly extroverted people who love the spotlight. Because of this, they are very entertaining and possess strong charisma (everyone likes to be around them). Small wonder these people are sales and marketing types. They thrive on entertaining people and are easily hurt if they cannot sway someone (such as “bombing” on stage).

Type “C” Personality – The antithesis of Type “B”; they are introverted detailists as represented by such people as accountants, programmers, and engineers. They may have trouble communicating to other people, but are a whirlwind when it comes to crunching numbers or writing program code. They tend to be very cautious and reserved, and will not venture into something until after all the facts have been checked out.

Type “D” Personality – Is best characterized as those people who resist any form of change and prefer the tedium of routine, such as in clerical assignments. They are not adventurous, resist responsibility and prefer to be told what to do.

It is not uncommon to find people with a blend of personalities, particularly A-B and C-D. But these basic personality types explain why some people work well together and others do not. For example Type-A clashes with Type-D simply because one is more adventurous than the other, and Type-B clashes with Type-C as one exhibits an extroverted personality and the other is introverted. Conversely Type-A works well with Type-B, and Type-C works well with Type-D.

4) Super Gonorrhoea

Scientists recently found a ‘superbug’ strain of gonorrhoea in Japan that is resistant to all recommended antibiotics, called H041. Gonorrhoea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract.

Gonorrhoea has progressively developed resistance to the antibiotic drugs prescribed to treat it. The emergence of cephalosporin-resistant gonorrhoea would mean doctors have no other option than to try untested medicines on the disease. Experts say that H041 could transform a once easily treatable infection into a global health threat.

3) Drug-resistant tuberculosis

TB is one of the world’s biggest killers, second only to HIV among infectious diseases, and is usually treatable with a course of antibiotics. Cases of antibiotic-resistant TB were reported for the first time in 2012 by Indian doctors in Mumbai.

Thousands of health professionals come to Australia each year looking for a new start, sun, sand, and the surf. Some even master surfing – but more learn how to fall from a surfboard! The sheer danger of some of the parts of our country is tempered by the absolute beauty and impressiveness of the natural features and very unique animals of Australia.

In Australia, we are exceptionally outgoing, confident, and always happy. Our personality, and the tendency to light-heartedly make fun of others sometimes bewilders, or shocks international visitors.

This article is the start of a series relating to how to start working in Australia as a health professional, and what you can do to get here – and have a successful career.

I have helped thousands of health professionals find work in Australia, and my company Beat Medical focusses on employment for doctors, dentists, physiotherapists, psychologists, senior nurses, and health managers. This article relates specifically to doctors.

The focus of this article is about what types of jobs are available in Australia, and what type of working conditions you can generally expect.

About the Australian Health System

The health system in Australia is largely a government funded, public healthcare system. It is of a very high standard, but is supplemented in part by a private healthcare system (funded by private paying patients, and health insurance companies).

It is not mandatory to have health insurance in Australia, as all citizens, and permanent residents are covered by the Medicare (www.medicare.gov.au) system – which is a federally funded system available to everyone. Healthcare is administered by the individual states around Australia through Public Hospitals. Visitors Australia from the UK, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Malta, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, and Italy are entitled to a limited amount of free healthcare in Australia.

Many Australians choose to take out private health insurance to supplement what the public system provides. This usually enables an individual to have their choice of doctor, and to stay in a private facility.

Most employment as a doctor in Australia is in a public hospital. There are different terms used in each region, but essentially there are four levels of doctor.

Interns are undergoing a supervised training year.

Residents are fully registered doctors, working in a general rotational position in a hospital.

Registrars are taking part in a speciality training program (equivalent to a resident in the USA).

Consultants are qualified specialists.

You would most likely be considering a position in one of the last three categories.

Medical Registration in Australia

The Australian Medical Council (http://www.amc.org.au/index.php/img) oversees the entry of international medical graduates into the Australian system. They have a very comprehensive and informative website, which you should review for information on how to become registered in Australia.

The Competent Authority model is one of the most straightforward ways to become registered in Australia. If your primary medical training was undertaken any of these countries, you are generally not required to complete any examinations to start work in Australia:?
United States of America
United Kingdom
Canada
New Zealand
Ireland

The standard pathway requires that you complete a multiple choice, and sometimes a  clinical examination before commencing work in an Australian state.

The specialist pathway is for doctors who are trained as a medical specialist in their home country. This pathway is also dependent on the relevant medical training college in Australia – as they will be the body responsible for assessing your qualifications and experience before recommending you to be registered in Australia.

As medical registration is a state based matter, the rules vary from state to state.

When you apply for a position in Australia, the recruitment company or hospital you are dealing with will generally assist you through the registration process.

Working Visas

Australia has very strict immigration policies, which are governed by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Depending on your country of origin, there are a number of visas that may be appropriate for you. The most common method of entry, though, is the 457 Temporary Business (Long Stay) Visa (http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/skilled-workers/sbs/). This visa requires sponsorship from an employer, and quite a detailed process for entry. It is relatively straightforward, though, and most can be managed online.

Working conditions

In Australia, the general working hours a 38-40 hours per week (0800-1700). As you can imagine, however, the working hours for a doctor are significantly different from the norm.

It is quite variable, but you can expect to work an additional 20 hours or so per week in overtime (which is generally paid at a higher rate). Those working in shift-work (for example in Emergency or Intensive Care) will work four or five twelve hour shifts per week, as well as some overtime.

The pay is quite variable, as it is state-based. However, the salaries in Australia are quite significant in comparison to many other countries. They are generally considered appropriate in relation to the cost of living in Australia.

In broad terms, as a resident you can expect to earn a base (before overtime) salary of between $60-70k per annum. As a registrar, $75-90k per annum, and a consultant $150k + per annum. These figures are open to significant variation, and simply provide a guide.

In Australia, employers are legally required to contribute at least 9% of your salary towards a superannuation (retirement) fund. You have complete control over how this fund is managed. You may be able to claim all of this money back if you depart Australia. Otherwise, it cannot be accessed until you are retirement age.

Taxation in Australia is relatively high, as we have a very high level of social services funded by the government. Go to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website for more information. You would generally be considered resident for taxation purposes if you are here for an extended period.

How to find a position

You can find a position through many of the job websites such as www.seek.com.au,
www.careerone.com.au, or www.mycareer.com.au. You can also access the individual health department websites, which all have job search engines.

There are a number of recruitment agencies in Australia who can assist you with the process of finding a position, and dealing with medical registration, working visas, relocation, and contract negotiation. Not all companies are the same, or offer the same level of service and quality. You should never pay a recruitment company in Australia (they should charge the employer).

The specialty coffee industry is among the fastest growing food industries in the world. If you may have noticed and I’m sure you have even if you don’t drink coffee, you can find many coffee shops in almost every corner in the downtown area. Specialty coffee, sometimes called gourmet or premium coffee, is grown in the world’s most ideal coffee producing climates, like in Costa Rica, and prepared according to exacting standards. And these standards are set by the Specialty Coffee Association of America or SCAA.

SCAA is the trade association for the specialty coffee industry. One of its functions is to set standards for growing, roasting, and brewing. Relocating to Florida – Florida Residency Requirements Regarding Registering and Licensing Your Vehicles

Florida is one of the most beautiful states in the country for driving, boating, flying, camping – you get the picture. But if you’re bringing a vehicle into the state (and planning to operate it) you’ll need to get it registered and/or obtain proper identification to boot. The following is a quick rundown of what you’ll need to do.

Automobiles:
Like most states, Florida residency requirements state that residents who plan to drive in the state apply for a Florida driver license and maintain valid automobile insurance. While there are a few exceptions, chances are good you’ll need to go through the process. 

Obtaining a Driver License: If you have an out-of-state license that hasn’t expired beyond 30 days, you’re in luck: you can easily convert it without taking a written or road test. However, you will still need to take a simple vision test. To schedule one, just contact your local DMV.

If you don’t plan to drive in Florida but still need a valid Florida ID, you can obtain an identification card instead. To qualify, you must present your valid social security card and provide another form of identification. Some counties also require that you are 12 years or older, so check with your local county’s guidelines to find out for sure. Cards are valid for four years and include all the basics: a photograph, name, gender, address, birth date, etc. (Those over 60 years old are issued “non-expiring” cards so they don’t need to worry about renewing them.)

Obtaining Car Insurance: Florida Residency Requirements require that youinsure your vehicle and you won’t be able to register your vehicle until you do it. What else is mandatory? Using an insurance company authorized to do business in the state. In some instances, your current company can simply help you transfer your current policy to your new state, so give them a call for details. Regardless, you must have insurance before you can register your vehicle.

Registration: If you’re moving to Florida, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 10 days of becoming a resident, becoming employed or putting your child into public school. Vehicles are registered for 12 months at a time, with the “year” starting in the owner’s birth month. You’ll need to pay for the entire year, whether you are registering it in the middle of the year or not.

If you’re registering your vehicle in Florida for the first time, you’ll need to have its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) officially verified. The Tax Collector’s Office can do this for you at the time you register your vehicle, or you can have it done by a law enforcement officer, notary or car dealer. If you choose the latter option, you’ll need to have that person fill out Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Form DHSMV 82042 to verify the VIN and odometer reading.

Once you register your vehicle, you can obtain a Florida title. To do so, take your proof of Florida insurance and title to your local county tax collector to obtain a Florida title. (If the title is currently held by a lien holder, they’ll help you get the original sent to Florida.)

Absent or rudimentary uterus

Complete absence of the uterus is very rare, but it may be rudimentary, when it is simply represented by a small thickening at the upper limit of the vagina. The endometrium is absent and there is amenorrhoea.

Failure of fusion of the Miillerian ducts

Failure of fusion of the two Mullerian tracts will give rise to varying degrees of duplication of the uterus and vagina, as shown in Fig. 8.2. There may be associated abnormalities of the ureters and kidneys.

Uterus didelphys

In this condition there is a complete lack of fusion of the Mullerian ducts, with a double uterus and double vagina.

Uterus bicomis bicollis

The two horns of the uterus remain completely separate as far as their cavities are concerned, although there is some fusion of the muscular walls, and the cervix is double. There mayor may not be a vaginal septum.

Uterus bicomis unicollis

The body of the uterus is bifid but the cervix is normally developed. The uterine horns may be unequal in size.

If you are traveling to Honduras for the first time you are probably interested in knowing what type of food that you will be exposed to. Is it good food? Is it too exotic? Is it something ill like? Well we will take a few moments to explore some of the delicious and wonderful food and drink you will experience in Honduras.

With a few notable exceptions there really is not that much of a difference in with the food in Honduras as here in the United States.

Breakfast in Honduras:

A typical breakfast in Honduras will usually consist of scrambled eggs, beans, and tortillas. In the bigger hotels and resorts of the area typical American breakfast are also available which often include orange juice, toast, eggs, bacon, and coffee.

Honduras Meals:

A normal meal in Honduras is usually consistent of a variety of things. These things would include beans, rice, tortillas and a grilled meat usually chicken but you will find that they use beef and fish more in certain parts of the country.  On the west coast of Honduras or in the bay inlands, seafood is the most widely used cuisine. But traveling there a trip would not be complete without tasting a fresh catch of shrimp, lobster, or the common favorite among natives the conch which is pronounced caracol in Spanish.

In the larger cities of the country like Tegucigalpa, and San Pedro you would be hard pressed to find a variety of American restaurants sine they keep popping up.  You will be able to eat at some of your favorite us restaurants like T.G.I. Friday’s pizza hut, KFC and even cinnabon.

Other Honduras meals:

Some other popular meals that are in Honduras that are must tries are

Burritas: they consist of a chopped meat, refried beans, homemade cheese and avocados, all rolled up into a crispy tortillas. These are not to be mistaken for burritos they are quite different.

Tamales: A major addition to the cuisine in Honduras is Tamales. They include vegetables or potatoes as well as chicken or pork. But beware if you by them off the corner street sometimes the chicken bones are left in there and can easily make you choke. But, major restaurants are going to be safer from visiting gringos to eat at anyway.

Pastelitos de Carne: This includes deep-fried flour pastries filled with meat, rice and/or potatoes. But, any combination of meats, chicken, and pork. Along with a variety of different vegetables so be daring and try a variety.

Snacks & Sides in Honduras:

Anafres: This a  traditional Honduran snack usually served before the main course. It contains hot black beans and cheese dip served with corn chips.

Tostones: This is a deep crunchy plantain this is the staple of traditional Honduran cuisine. It is also known to natives as Platanos fritos.

Ceviche: This is another traditional snack that is truly Honduran. It is made up of raw fish, shrimp or conch and is mixed with tomatoes, onions, barley or cilantro, and is marinated in juice. It is then served with hot tortillas and chips and is something to try if your near the coastal regions.

Honduran Desserts:

Of course now we get to the good stuff traditional Honduran desserts..

The first one is my personal favorite

Tres Leches Cake: It is just as it is named it is a cake that is made with three different types of mike. Each one that provides for a eventful flavor it includes evaporated milk, sweetened milk, and milk cream.

Arroz con Leche: This particular cake is soaked in sugar and hot milk, cinnamon and some homegrown traditional spices. It is also referred to the Honduran rice pudding.. a must try for any dessert lover.

Beverages in Honduras:

Of course what is a vacation without trying some of the local beers or liquors you might come across. Some of the more popular brands of beer in Honduras are Salva Vida, Barenea, and Port Royal. But if your really in the mood or daring you may want to seek out Giffity and Fiery Garifuna liquor.

Of course with any visit to a foreign land always make sure you are aware of what you are eating and that no allergies are present that may make you sick. They cook there food differently so even in “American” restaurants the food will taste different. So be prepared and most of all enjoy yourself and indulge in this wonderful Cuisine.
